What is motor insurance excess?

An insurance excess is the amount you pay towards a claim. It’s your contribution to the cost of repairs or settlement. There are two types: Compulsory excess: Set by your insurer based on your risk (for example, your age or vehicle) Voluntary excess: An amount you choose when taking out your policy, which can reduce your premium These are added together to make your total excess, which you usually pay when making a claim. Some optional products, such as excess protection, may allow you to claim this cost back (depending on your cover). Watch Our Quick Guide

Will I get my excess reimbursed on my motor claim?

If your claim is found to be your fault, your excess is usually not refunded. If we recover all costs from the third party and liability is accepted, we will try to recover your excess for you. If successful, this will be refunded. However, this cannot be guaranteed. If you have excess protection, you will still need to pay your excess upfront, but you may be able to claim it back through your provider. For more information, please contact us on 020 3738 7300.

Do I have to pay my excess?

If you claim through your comprehensive policy, you will usually need to pay your excess before repairs begin. Your excess is made up of: A compulsory amount set by your insurer Any voluntary excess you chose when taking out your policy The total amount will be shown on your insurance documents.

What do I do if I can’t pay my excess?

If you’re unable to pay your excess, please let us know as soon as possible. We understand that this can happen and will discuss your options with you. In some cases, your claim may be paused until you are able to proceed.

Why is the excess £4,000?

One Insurance policies are designed with a high excess, which means: You agree to pay a larger amount towards any claim In return, this may reduce the cost of your policy This type of policy is generally intended for larger or more serious claims.

How does the £4,000 excess work?

Your excess applies once per claim, across all sections (buildings and contents). Depending on the type of damage: • If the cost of repairs is less than £4,000, the claim will not be accepted • If the cost of repairs is more than £4,000, you may need to pay the £4,000 excess upfront so work can begin • If you cannot afford to pay the excess, we may offer a cash settlement instead and deduct the £4,000 excess from the amount we pay you • If the property is beyond economic repair and needs to be rebuilt, we deduct the £4,000 excess from your final settlement

When do I pay my excess?

Your excess may be applied: Before repairs begin, or Deducted from any settlement payment We will explain how this applies to your claim.
